2008 Election Project- Week #5

So this blog will be all about the swing states...

The swing states will this election will be Florida, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Colorado, New Jersey, Iowa, Minnesota, Oregon, Missouri, Nevada, New Hampshire, Oregon, Washington, Wisconsin, Tennessee, New Mexico, and VIRGINIA!!!

Many of these states have been unpredictable for the elections, which is why they are considered swing states. States such as Virginia and Washington have normally voted Republican, but from recent polls, they have been leaning Democrat, causing an upset. Other states are on the border like Ohio. With Florida, there is a mix of the population, making it always a pivotal state. In Florida, there are many retirees and then there are many immigrants or naturalized citizens. This created an ideoligical clash between the two ideals.

New Jersey- this state is an interesting swing state. Since it is in the northeast, there is an assumption that it is liberal. This is, however, not the case. I think, though, that it will lean toward Obama because of a few variables. I think that people want change and they beleieve that change will not come with McCain as president. This will probably pursuade the independents and some republicans. Also, New York City is in that state and influences much of the state. Urban areas tend to be more liberal and that can possibly pursuade some states.

Virginia (the best state ever!)- Virginia is an interesting specimen. Virginia tends to lean more Republican in the past elections. This, however, may not be the case. Because of changing demographics, I feel that Virginia is going to lean towards Obama. People are ready for change and the newer voter generation in Virginia, I feel, tend to be more liberal with their views. However, soutehrn Virginia tends to be the region that goes conservative. The south mostly does this because it is very much in the south and is very agricultural. The agricultural regions tend to be conservative. However, in the Richmond area, there is a larger concentration of Obama supporters. Also, the VCU campus is located there, housing liberal college students. Notehrn VA tends to vote more liberal because of the massive concentration of immigrants and its large suburban demography. I think that the liberals are going to outdo the conservatives in this election. People want change and it probably won't come with McCain.

Ok THEN?...

PEACE...

Yeah I don't know why Obama has been dropping in the polls for NC because last week he was ahead. Hopefully that will turn around in the next week and a half. I also did VA and I think it's incredible that we are actually going Democratic this year, first time in 40 years! But I agree, it's definitely because of the demographic changes and how hard Obama has been campaigning and pouring money into our state.

Over achiever getting the posts done early...gosh...JK it really helps me too b/c then i can post early...haha!

So yea I chose Ohio and Florida basically for the same reasons you chose NJ and VA. What I have noticed is that most of the swing states tend to favor the Republican party (voting for Bush in 2004) but like you said have current upsets like favoring Obama by a small percentage. It will be interesting to see if these results will follow through on election day and who will actually win the states elections.

I also think that even though Obama is taking time off to be with his grandma he is all set with the campaign. He has been going strong for so long he has all but deserved this break. Plus, his grandma needs him most right now. McCain on the other hand is lacking on the advertising and campaigning. I feel like he isn't putting enough effort in, especially for the swing states, and that this will in the end be a detriment to his election run.

adios mi amigo!!!

Yay for democratic Virginia! lol
Mainly just a big change in demographics now, main because of a liberals are a majority in Northern VA and southern VA is beginning to change over as well and becoming less rural. But, I doubt McCain will pull Virginia away from Obama, it's still a significant lead for a swing state. Good point about New Yorkers influencing New Jersey, a lot of the people that live in those places can be interchangeable!

Hey Tyler! First off, I would like to say that I like your pictures with the phone, they are quite funny! :) Okay soo I agree that Virginia is the best state everrr, and that it is an important swing state in this election. Since Virginia has in the past voted Republican this change in views is eye catching. Like you said, many young voters in the Northern area of Virginia want change, and from my observation, many more are leaning more liberal. We shall see! As for NJ, what you said was very interesting! Good job on your post, and HAPPY BIRTHDAY! :)
